Report: 75,000 Toyota Priuses headed to U.S. by end of 2011

In a rare twist of events, Automotive News (sub. req.) reports that one of the world's leading newswire services mistakenly let slip (i.e., issued a press release) that boatloads (75,000 to be exact) of Toyota Prius hybrids will ship out from Japan and arrive in U.S. showrooms by the end of 2011.

Now, that release is supposedly nowhere to be found (not true). As it turns out, the newswire agency had accidentally issued the release and upon discovering the fault, issued an instant "kill, kill, kill," according to AN. This untimely release put Toyota's public relations staff in a frenzy, says AN.

Was the release inaccurate? Doubt it. According to AN, the statement included a quote from Toyota boss Bob Carter and photos of Priuses at the Port of Long Beach in California. AN closed with a statement of its own: "Don't be surprised to see this release re-released next Tuesday." Without the immediate retraction, we'd assume.

Want to idle your big truck in California? You'll need a sticker

Filed under:

Certified clean idle stickerWant to idle that diesel engine in your 2008 or newer medium-duty truck in California for more than five minutes? You'll need a sticker for that.

Way back in 2008, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) decided to make it illegal to idle diesel-engined trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds for more than five minutes. That GVWR is above that of most heavy-duty pickups like the Dodge Ram 3500, Ford F-350 and GMC Sierra 3500, but does cover most chassis-cab trucks.

CARB's regulation says that manufacturers of diesel engines have to either incorporate an anti-idling system or to certify that the engine emits 30 grams or fewer of nitrogen oxide per hour in order to get a sticker. If the oil-burning engine meets that limit, it can, at least in theory, idle forever.

For 2011, the Ram 4500/5500 and Ford F-450/F-550 chassis-cab trucks meet CARB's certified clean idle requirements, meaning that they get one them flashy stickers (pictured). Being able to idle indefinitely isn't really sticker-worthy, right?

Or that Connecticut's gas tax of 73.1 cents a gallon is the highest of any state in the nation. Or maybe even that Alaska, which charges just 26.4 cents a gallon, can boast that it's home to the lowest gas tax in the country?

Unsafe at Any Price: Collecting the Chevrolet Chevette and Ford Pinto

When shaggy old cars go from the pound to the endangered-species list, they can achieve a sort of contrarian collectibility. Vehicles that disappear do so for (mostly) good reasons, but if ?you?ve got about $1000 burning a hole in your pocket, head to Craigslist and show people that you don?t care what you drive. 1976?87 [...]
